State Guard and federal agencies will be monitoring Tamaulipas highways to ensure safe travel during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

State Guard will be deployed on Tamaulipas highways to prevent extortion during their journey from the United States to Mexico to reunite with their families for the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Public Security Secretary Carlos Arturo Pancardo Escudero stated that highway patrol and State Traffic personnel will be monitoring the situation to ensure that no officer demands money from returning residents.

The plan includes coordinated operations with federal agencies such as the Mexican Army and the National Guard to maintain constant surveillance from border crossings in Nuevo Laredo, Matamoros, Reynosa, Miguel Alemán, and other locations, to the central and southern parts of the state as they cross into other states.

“Of course, a special operation is being implemented, especially to guarantee safe passage through the state,” the official stated.

During the winter holiday period, citizen complaints increase via social media regarding alleged cases of extortion by security personnel on highways nationwide, and Tamaulipas is no exception.

In this context, the secretary indicated that complaints and reports can be filed anonymously by calling 089 or 911, so that each case can be investigated.

The secretary explained that the operation is part of the year-end security plan, which also includes protecting tourist areas, bus terminals, and border crossings, as well as escorting caravans of Mexican nationals returning to the central and southern parts of the country.

Coordination with federal and local authorities will allow for a reinforced presence of the State Guard and the Highway Patrol along major transit corridors, including the Reynosa–Victoria, Nuevo Laredo–San Fernando, and Tampico–Ciudad Mante routes, where the highest volume of traffic is recorded during holiday periods.

In the meantime, State Guard patrols will continue their regular patrols to respond immediately to any reports of extortion or abuse against Mexican nationals returning to Mexico.
